Have you tried recent versions of ImageMagick?  It has multiple performance
improvements including support for parallel processing on dual and quad core
processors.  Its extreme but we did get one report of a process that went
from 34 seconds to 4 on an 4 dual-core processor host.

Regarding version 5 syntax, Anthony may have a solution for you in a 
subsequent e-mail.
