[magick-users] Problem converting large tiff pictures

Hello everyone,
I wanted to use "convert" to scale down b&w tiff files from 18000x13000 
to something more usable in the 800x600 range. Even after a lot of trial 
and error I could not find the right parameters to get a result in a 
feasible time (around 20 seconds would be nice).
Could you give me some tips how to solve that problem?
