It turns out I was just being a complete idiot. It wasn't the write 
that was producing the error (the fact that the file was actually 
getting written should perhaps have been a clue), but attempting to 
read the file back afterwards and some previously cached value was 
getting returned instead.

My apologies for the misdirected question.

However, I'd still like to know what the error

failed assertion `image->signature == MagickSignature'

actually means.
