Thanks for your wonderful help in this. It seems that a lot of astronomical
image processing packages have this capability built in to one degree or
another. (color/gamma aligning varies greatly though) Two that I have found
that seem promising are Registax4 and Stellar Magic. There are some
alternatives such as Astroart but this list is by no means comprehensive.
This would make sense for montaging planet surfaces and the like. Some of
the programs work by creating reference points in the images and using the
mouse wheel to perform the flicker compare. As to color/gamma alignment and
autoblend/autoalign, I think the latest version of Photoshop has this
functionality in droves. Check out some of their flash demonstrations of
these features and you will be quite amazed. However, all this can be
approximated by using the various alternatives described here.
