My previous message to this list was rejected, so I will try again :)

I went with David's suggestion, with a couple of minor modifications for 
command-line syntax on Windows:

convert nz_day.jpg nz_clouds.jpg ( +clone -channel a -fx 
"(r+g+b)^2.0/(3^2.0)" ) \
     -delete 1 -composite nz_composite.jpg

This worked perfectly!
