[magick-users] Aligning an image sequence

I would like to write a script that will align a sequence of images. This is
useful e.g. for time lapses where camera has accidentally been moving, or
telescope tracking has been inaccurate. The images are JPEG. My idea is to
extract a color channel (that is, an array with a value for each pixel) and
correlate images, shifting vertically/horizontally and finding the best
correlation. If necessary I could add rotation.

1) Does anybody know of a (free) program that will align images? Windows
preferred, but Linux is fine too.
2) How do I easiest go about creating the array w. a value for each pixel
which I need for correlating?
