I am not sure what "xv" uses for smoothing, but I myself like it.

I think it is a -median filter, but am not certain.

The only time I hacked the source of that program was to increase the
size of the default thumbnailing  (the defult is too small for modern
displays).

If you find out more, please let me know.  "XV" is still better than a
lot of the other image browsers I have seen.
