Thanks for the clarification, now I can stop searching my mistake...
I guess I'll have to find a sane way to work around that problem by 
substituting those characters in comments at write and readout time. 
Probably some sed scripting and using a @-letter combination as a 
resplacement, since the ImageMagick versions I tested seem to cope very 
well with @s.
