Anthony,

I think you misunderstand. The 'dithering' is done by photoshop.
IM is acting exactly as I expect. Photoshop is doing something to
the image to make it much smaller than the .gif that IM can produce.

I was asking whether IM can so something similar - I'm guessing that
PS is increasing redundancy in the image to make LZW compress better.
In fact, going after that guess in Google comes up with this patent:

"Transformation to increase the lempel-ziv compressibility of
images with minimal visual distortion"

...and I'm guessing that that's what PS is doing, and that IM
would have to find a different way of doing it if such a thing
were considered useful.
