[magick-users] Using convert in "read only" mode (or trying to, and failing)

Trying an ImageMagick "convert" command, in modes that I presumed don't
need to open any files for writing, returns a "Permission denied" error :

  convert -list coder

  /usr/bin/ld: cannot open output file /root/install/ImageMagick-6.2.8/utilities/.libs/2366-lt-convert: Permission denied
  collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

  convert -help

  /usr/bin/ld: cannot open output file /root/install/ImageMagick-6.2.8/utilities/.libs/2385-lt-convert: Permission denied
  collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

(In case it is relevant, the sys admin installed ImageMagick on a linux server
to enable use of the perl Image::Magick module, and that works fine.)

Anyone have an idea what the problem may be?

(I have been working through "The Definitive Guide to ImageMagick", by Michael
Still, and this is almost the first command in the book, in the installation
and configuration section; but there is no mention of the above error message!)
