I just looked up GIF in 'The Definitive Guide to ImageMagick' (a fine book), p 
75, and it seems to me that OP's 0.25 scaling factor for Opacity (1 - 
Transparency) will not be dealt with by GIF in the same way PNG will deal with 
it.
