OK, things are a bit better now. (I also had to set   
DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/local/lib to pick up freetype in the first  
place.)

Unfortunately, the text still doesn't look good:

The normal rendering (good) on the left, IM's output on the right.
In smaller font sizes, it's fairly clear that the text appear much  
too "thin".
