Chuck,

I think you are running into a version problem.  I'm running Ubuntu, and 
the imagemagick package has a version of "7:6.2.4.5.dfsg1-2ubuntu1".  
The key is the epoch version (before the colon) - it looks like the 
package you are getting from alien doesn't have that.

Does alien have an option to manually specify the version string?  I 
think you want something like "7:6.3.8-1".
