Installing ImageMagick/ Mogrify ... Whisky Tango Foxtrot

Post here to shower the ImageMagick developers with praise or discuss how you could have done a better job if you developed ImageMagick. Or talk about how Photoshop is better than ImageMagick. Even complain about how no one answered your postings in the Users forum. Venting and musings welcomed here.

Installing ImageMagick/ Mogrify ... Whisky Tango Foxtrot

Post by Firetom »

Now I've wasted 4 hours of my precious time, trying to download and install
*ImageMagick and
*Mogrify

as of the same reason so many others did it: to batch process my images in LR2, adding a watermark to it.

I am NOT a programmer. At best I would call myself a photographer (of some kind)...
meaning: sorry, but I read/write/talk in oral language (choose English/ German) - NOT anal C++

At first I wrestle myself towards the download locations, get both programs (ImageMagick and Mogrify), thereafter I look into the

* "install-windows" txt document... Anybody taught you guys to use the "Return" key when writing a text? Obviously not. wtf? &%$§! Endless sentences in one mindboggling paragraph... I would have loved to reproduce this here, BUT hey... the Author of this software was smart and limited the number of characters...

So - after unzipping both programs to a convenient location of my choice (on my desktop, along with my CS4 applications, exact path: C:\Users\tOm Shanti\Desktop\Adobe Design Premium CS4\LRPlugins) I'm told to install/ configure ImageMagick...

ok.. no "installwizard"... how magick is that?... where is that file I got to double click? riiiight, here it is...

so far so good... configured... but next to

* "message digest" ... ??? to enter some fricking command into the MS-Dos promter??? ... guys... which century are you living in? Guess what: "Amiga has revolutionized the PC world" EVEN IBM changed their customer approach... not you... ok ... In case you missed it: now you can create buttons that can be clicked on...

To cut a long story short, I'm trying and trying and it's just like the Great Chinese Wall! I'm a hun and remain outside.

- invalid parameter: image.jpg ... yaddayadda

- there further is NO "Mogrify.exe" anywhere to be found on my computer (in case that ImageMagick has accidentally been installed properly) and when searching this board for the topic, I do find someone who 'recently' had the same problem (oh my... maybe here's an answer to find the gate..)

NO WAIT! Your kind answer:

We did not write nor do we support LR2. Contact the LR2 publisher for help.

Say "what"? Contact Adobe because the "mogrify.exe" is missing? Thank you my friend. My dearest gratitude for successfully separating me from more than 4hrs whilst the sun is shining outside, the birds are celebrating existence and my other projects idle. Thank you so much.

Would have been interesting to use your program and to finally batch-process my images, adding a watermark before uploading them to the net.
But apparently not so - at least for me.

Congratulations for all the photographers who have the knowledge, skills and persistence to implement your plugins to their systems... unfortunately nobody posted a comprehensive tutorial as in "How I did it..."

Enjoy life and celebrate..

love and light

Installing Imagemagick on windows is simplicity:
Download and run the latest binary release ( .exe file ) for windows from http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binar ... hp#windows
If you can not get it to work with your program use a batch file like I do and either convert a whole directory or drag and drop onto an icon.
Some batch file examples here http://www.rubblewebs.co.uk/imagemagick/batch.php

thanks for the encouragement, Bonzo... some people say: "hope is hell"... ;)

first: thanks for the batch links... got to emphasize that programming languages to me are like Chinese letters: looking good at but almost impossible to understand... so let's go with the first part of your advice:

wowza - after klicking on the link a nother time with no effect, I right-klicked it "save link as..." and look here, something is happening... tadaa... a download. "6.5.9-9" ... 12MBs (interesting to note the different file-sizes, 6.5.8-10 is 3x the size) but let's wait, cause I also downloaded 6.5.9-6 and a number of others...

1st attempt: "the setup files are corrupted, please obtain..." - here we go again
after 2nd download: ooooh - an installation wizard :o

on test: "unable to open image 'logo.miff': Permission denied @ Error blob...." guess that's according to Vista-paranoid... :|

but oooh - I got a "Mogrify.exe" :)

I will see whether that unlocked the Magick

Thanks so much for your help... XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (eeeew - homophobia? ;) )

I'd guess the other guy posting had the same trouble as me... I'd rate your answer 5*

will post here and let you know whether that finally gave me the watermark (rubs donation coder) ;)

I am glad you are getting sorted tOm; if you get any more problems I recomend you post in the User section.

I was frustrated when I first started using IM as I wanted to use it on my website with php and there were no examples and thats why I setup my website section.

You do not need to use Mogrify as if you setup a batch file you can do a lot more with convert. You have to be careful with Mogrify as unless instructed not to it will overwrite your original image.

I have a batch files setup on my desktop and to convert the photos for my personal website I just drag and drop the photo over the batch file icon and it automaticaly resizes, adds a 1px border, adds the copyright text ( resized to suite each photo ) and a drop shadow.

Sorry Bonzo -

the trouble continues... guess I got Mogrify working at one instant... can't quite remember.

I guess I processed some images and then fell into the "hurry up" trap and tried to process 10 + another 10 ... at the very same time.
An error message popped up that this would be prohibited due to restrictions of the trial version.
After this it seems as if the "mogrify.exe" magically vanished from my computer.

I'm now in the 3rd hour today trying to fix it. My other projects idling again. Outside the sun is shining at aprox. 36°C - I could get a decent tan and take a swim in the ocean. Instead I'm really getting p****d off about this entire thing and the people who developed this.

Congratulations on getting IM/Mogrify running... it really looks like the right tool to use (for you).

Frankly speaking: at this point I start resenting. If Timothy has ever been in the pipeline to get some of my manifested energy (in terms of money donated to his work) - I passed this stage. At this point (facing the mind-frick of insufficient instructions from "institutions involved" and confusing 3rd party contributions in various forums, facing the amount of versions of IM/Mogrify available, etc.) ... even IF I would ever be able to get IM/Mogrify running with LR2.6, I'd rather stick to the 10 images limit than giving him a single buck.

I know we're living in a world where multinational companies are calling back 100s of 1.000s of cars and such... where we get to buy faulty products and then sent off in a merry go round to fix the bugs... gutta get your act together Timothy... I'm not buying.

Thanks for your attempts, Bonzo - you're a good guy and I'm certain if you'd put out a comprehensive tutorial as to "how to (install IM/Mogrify; create a batch processor for the same purposes you are describing above) you would make people (including me) really happy....

.... unbelievable ....

after another complete uninstall and re-install I was able to launch the IM/Mogrify application...

Q: is it necessary to hide the IM installer somewhere in the massive amount of folders? Without telling people exactly where to find it? Is it really necessary to have that many files which can't be opened, because they do lack any extension?

My gf is completely annoyed because I was stressed out and too focused on getting this application running (thanks).
I produced a watermark and added a frame to my images.

I can't export 10 - but only 9 images... : ( the tenth image is not being processed, a error message is popping up instead. *shrug*

It's now 4pm... I started this operation at around 1pm... : ( I'm heading to the beach.

Perhaps that is a lightroom issue. You don't need lightroom to run mogrify. You can open a terminal window or DOS window and run it in command line mode to process every image in some folder. It is not limited to 9 images.

See syntax at http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/basics/#mogrify

I understand you are not that used to using something that is not a GUI and this may too foreign for you to do as you will need to learn some of the other IM commands if it is not just a simple change of image format.

But I thought I would mention it, if you feel so inclined. If you tell us exactly what you want to do, we can try to give you the IM command line to do it with mogrify.

fmw42 (and bonzo):

thanks for your attempts - I really appreciate it.

What I do not understand is: why do I have to re-enter the path to "mogrify.exe" then and again - after it already worked fine.

All I'm doing really is to "optimize" some images in LR2.6 and then applying a watermark on export. As the LR watermark is laughable (at 300ppi hard to spot)... I want to use Mogrify... is more like a morgue to me... I also use LR without "mogrification" - is that why I have to specify the path again?

Really I left the DOS behind. Long time ago. I'm not a programmer or IT specialist. Man - back then... AMIGA 2.0 yes, back then I did all that dir/w stuff and edit config.sys but not these days, that's 20 years past. Is taking, sorting, storing and publishing pictures not a job enough? I got other projects... but I like to publish my pictures on the web - not having to decrypt cave paintings... ;)

You guys are great - thanks for wasting your time on me

(oh damn, where is the  smiley now?)

I am not a windows user. I use a Mac. But there is a good tutorial for the technically minded about IM on windows at http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/windows/ and somethings about installing from binary at http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binar ... hp#windows and from source at http://www.imagemagick.org/download/www ... ml#windows.

If you are so inclined to try to use IM mogrify without LR2, then if you post links to and example set of images and explain what you want to do with it and possibly a result from LR2, we can certainly show you how to use mogrify to do the same thing on a folder of images.

I do use Windows... only because (for me) it's been the successor to the graphic user interface of AMIGA... I don't enjoy learning C+ DOS or any other computer language for that matter.

I do use LR because basically it's faster for image correction than PS (for me) - I'm not a pro ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/8627201@N03/ - these are old images of my underdeveloped and half abandoned Flickr account) ... I only want to add a watermark to images published on Flickr and FB... some enhancement for the Shutterstock account I'm about to create... far from fancy.

Thanks for pointing these links out for me - I guess the installation process is now completed (thanks to you guys) and this thread should come to its natural demise. Thanks for the admins and developers to enable users like me to vent their frustration and find help from other users.

nice one :)

IM and mogrify are what they are, by that probably too scientific for a guy like me. I'm part of the comic generation - I need picture and video-tutorials... endless text is loosing me fast.

might see you in another forum on this board...

Copy the code below and paste into notepad, save as watermark.bat and put on your desktop.
Drag and drop a test file over the icon; a photo with a text watermark will be saved in the original folder with a th_ suffex.

Code: Select all

:: Do not display the code while running
@echo OFF

:: Auto oriantate the image if required, add a text watermark bottom right corner - white with black shadow
:: Change the path to the font you want to use
convert.exe %1 -auto-orient -font C:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf -fill black -pointsize 80 -gravity southeast -annotate +13+13 "Anthony" -font C:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf -fill white -pointsize 80 -gravity southeast -annotate +18+18 "Anthony" "th_%~n1.jpg"
