Re: Seeking advice on a complex image cataloging project

I haven't used Windows with any regularity for some years, snibgo, but I am familiar with Windows Explorer from those years in which I did.And it's true that file browsers, both under Windows and under linux, do typically offer thumbnail views. I should clarify at this point that the reason I'm lean...

Re: Seeking advice on a complex image cataloging project

Thanks for your reply, fmw42: you've clarified the matter of the need to convert to web-browser compatible formats, which I suspected would be required for this solution to work. My experimentation with the visual index images script I referenced indicated that it automates the process of inserting/...

Seeking advice on a complex image cataloging project

I'm a linux user (Arch) who has done a bit of tinkering with image files using imagemagick over the years. So, though I'm not an IM power user by any means, I'm not a complete novice, either. I've now been called on to assist an elderly artist who is in the early stages of Alzheimers to catalog his ...

Re: Some issues with creating contact sheets from tif

I do have read/write access to /tmp, if that's the directory imagemagick uses: I tested that just now by creating a file in that directory, then editing it. Anyway, I'll keep plugging away at this. Turns out this may be less of a problem than troubles I'm encountering trying to batch convert tif's t...

Re: Some issues with creating contact sheets from tif

This is a Linux machine. It has 2GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive that is maybe 15% full. The images are on an external 500GB hard drive that is less than 10% filled. The RAM is a bit low on this machine but between the two hard drives there should be a few hundred GB's to spare. Thanks

Re: Some issues with creating contact sheets from tif

Thanks for your continued interest: identify X.tif gives image.tif TIFF 12288x9216 12288x9216+0+0 8-bit CMYK 453MB 0.010u 0:01.790. Running identify -verbose X.tif results in the error message I reported in this thread's title: "identify: unable to extent pixel cache `No such file or directory'...

Re: Some issues with creating contact sheets from tif

Ok, the 15 MB ones show "Number pixels: 4.915M" when I open them with display and look at image info. I tried opening a really large one (433 MB) with display and got the same " unable to extent pixel cache `No such file or directory' @ fatal/cache.c/CacheSignalHandler/3353" erro...

Re: Some issues with creating contact sheets from tif

Thanks for your reply, snibgo. I'm uncertain how many pixels are in those tif's: I'm not too well-versed in the technicalities of computer graphics and image processing. I'll go look up some information on how to determine that and report back here. I can at least say that the sizes of some are huge...

Some issues with creating contact sheets from tif

I need to make contact sheets from a large number of image files that are in both jpg and tif formats. I discovered the mogrify command and found some helpful samples of how to run it. Initial tests using some jpg files went quite well. However, as I try to use this command to make contact sheets fr...

how large/long can an animated gif be?

I'm considering putting together an animation that is essentially choreographical. It is intended for teaching purposes, i.e., to help those who will participate in this activity to learn their roles. It should show a sequence of movements within a closed space, indicating at what point each individ...

Re: A few hundred images (in the right order) to pdf

No need to modify, Just use it as I said. mv_perl 's/\d+/sprintf "%05d", $&/eg' files... Thanks for the further input. I guess I misunderstood. But, in fact, I still don't understand. I can understand that mv_perl is a perl script, and I know how to run a perl script. I can also guess...

Re: A few hundred images (in the right order) to pdf

I suggest you rename them thus: ms-pg1.jpg ==> 001.jpg ms-pg1b.jpg ==> 002.jpg ms-pg2.jpg ==> 003.jpg ms-pg2b.jpg ==> 004.jpg etc If you have thousands of images, you should use 0001.jpg, etc. Thanks for your comments. My initial idea for creating this document was to insert each image manually int...

Re: A few hundred images (in the right order) to pdf

'can you use sed to find any number followed by a period and rename it to the same number followed by the letter "a" followed by a period?' Thanks for your reply. I don't have much experience with sed but would be willing to try using it. Only I don't see how the solution you've proposed g...

Re: A few hundred images (in the right order) to pdf

Thanks again for your reply. Modifying the perl script looked a bit daunting to me so I decided to try some things with a utility I've previously used--a utility called "mmv." It didn't help much. Again, the problem seems to me to be that the convert command finds files using default ls ou...

Re: A few hundred images (in the right order) to pdf

Thanks for the replies. The perl script looks like the best possibility for my purposes since my scripting skills are virtually non-existent. But I think the script is unhappy with the letter I've appended (the letter "b") to about half of my numbers, at least when it comes to triple-digit...
